Bar Rate Calculation

The spring rate of a torsion bar can be calculated from the following measurements:

Measurements

BD - Bar Diameter
The outside diameter of the torsion bar material
BL - Bar Length
The overall length of the torsion bar
LL - Lever Length
The length of the lever arm that applies a twisting force to the torsion bar (from bar end to wheel centreline)

Calculation

SR - Spring Rate
= TR x BD4 / BL x LL2
(Where TR is torsional resistance of bar material)

The form below allows the spring rate to be calculated for a steel torsion bar (torsional resistance = 1,120,000).
